Happy that I discovered The Daily Post WordPress challenges. They’re inspiring. The photo this week of a Vancouver beach really caught my eye. The photo and post is about Textures.

 

Instagram Quick Tip Chose Pictures that Evoke Emotions and use relevant hashtagsI adore when textures come through in photographs and art. I like when you can see them with the naked eye. I love when you can feel them with a light touch to a work of art.

Normally I would post this on a different blog. It’s about the powerful emotional punch of a single photo so I thought it’d make for a good Instagram quick tip.

With Instagram it’s about the picture & the hashtags. Research the hashtags, keep them relevant and post photos that evoke your emotions. If you feel it, visitors will too. Using hashtags relating to your picture will bring you happy visitors; tricking people won’t.

Analytics is Taking a Backseat

Bumping Social Marketing Analytics to 2018

So I did say that analytics was going to be one of my top 2 social marketing issues to resolve in 2017. I, apparently like so many others am pushing this back for now. Most likely to first priority for 2018.

Google Analytics for Social Marketing analytics and data measurementI’ll just have to put together a spreadsheet and do some tracking and calculating on my own. I’m not at the stage yet that I need drilled down specific stats. I can work with what’s available from the apps themselves and google analytics for now. I’ll figure out how much time I can afford to allocate, and with that I’ll decide what basic social marketing stats I can get by with.

I know I need to deal with social marketing analytics sooner rather than later, but right now I’m low in the budget department on both fronts. Have to watch the cash flow for a bit, and I am stretched to my limit for time.

When I start spending money for paid analytics, I have to be ready to learn at the same time. No point in wasting money. I’m not ready to work with the numbers, there just isn’t time right now.

To be effective, I have to learn one new program at a time. Social media post scheduling is going to be first. Once I’ve mastered the scheduling that will free up the time I need to test a paid version of my top pick social analytics program.

Emotionally not jiving with learning a new analytics program

The other reason I’m bumping analytics down one is more of an emotional aspect. I want to get back to doing more of the type of social that makes me happy. I really enjoy being creative with social media content. Being creative makes me happy! Being genuinely social makes me happy!

Been so busy with every other aspect of social marketing that I lost sight of why I was doing it in the first place.

Besides, there is the added bonus that I do like playing with spread sheets. Odd as it may seem, spreadsheets and crunching numbers well that’s just one of my things. So now that I’m ok with my revised priorities for the balance of 2017, time to get creative creating some new content.

Also, time to take the plunge! Look out social media post scheduling apps, here I come!

 

Socialize on Social? Now There’s a Novel Idea

Social Media; Do you engage?

Do you take the time to socialize on social media or are you too busy social marketing?

Do you think it’s possible that if you just “get social” and have some fun, results will follow? That posting good content and conversing with others results will follow? Isn’t growing social media relationships the goal? Aren’t enjoyment and engagement the original purpose of social media? As people get to know each other through engagement does credibility & trust naturally develop? If you have what they need won’t you be first to come to mind?

That engaging with like-minded people and developing genuine relationships is in fact a good business practice.

This is especially true for smaller “solopreneur” type businesses because owners are usually quite passionate about their niche. More than likely, they have a personal interest in common with their customers.

Have fun with social media engagement!

I happen to enjoy being creative when it comes to social media content. I put a lot of effort into it. I’m an artist with paints, apps & words. Taking photos, making pic collages, putting together amateur videos, even playing around with screenshots. Making Instaboomerangs and time lapse videos, oh my. I fancy myself a wordsmith too and yes, the thesaurus in Word is a good buddy of mine. One that I visit with frequently.

That’s it! Making content! I need to get back to what makes social media fun. It’s what drew me to social marketing in the first place. I was having fun and having fun is key to happiness.

So caught up in achieving numbers, I was teasing myself with the promise of some fun time. I totally lost track of the why. I started tweeting because it’s fun. I love fiddling around with different photo apps and putting funky collages together for Instaposts and that’s ok!

Note to self  👉 hop over and revise number two of #SOS2017 to Create More Quality Content.

Mind you, I most certainly did not forget about how much fun socializing is 👍🏻

Genuinely nice feedback on social media feels good.

I love talking to people on the web and off. Engaging with people on social media is fun. I like to initiate conversations and I enjoy joining in. I like commenting aweeeee when I see a really cute pic or eeeeeek if it’s creepy.

I click the link to read the blog post and take the time to share my opinion if it was interesting.

Social Media is about Engaging. In face engagement is the objective.
Reach out & Genuinely Compliment

I work hard creating content and when somebody takes the time to leave a relevant comment on it, it makes my day. So, I in turn like to do the same. I press a lot of likes and repost quality social media posts. Both true but, I take time contemplating my comments. I want them to be a genuine reaction to what attracted me into clicking on the post, regardless of the social media platform.

These are just two of the reasons that I am building my career within this spectrum they call social marketing.

Which brings me to the conclusion that I need to go back and slightly alter my number two…. #SOS2017 article.

Social Marketing is here to stay with more jobs on the way!

I’m fresh off this morning’s 2017 State of Social Report Reveal webinar. The time is right, and the future is bright for those of us working in social marketing.

Thank you Lucy Hitz and Bryan Blackburn from Simply Measured for hosting the webinar. It was quite “revealing”. You both did a great job delivering report highlights without being too social media techy.

Social Marketing careers on the horizon

Lucy and Bryan referred to this as “the year of contradictions”.  For example, respondents indicated that goal setting is still NOT happening, yet advertising spending is on the rise.

Social Marketing Jobs On the RiseSocial media influencers are pegged as vital to success (yeah) but no money is being budgeted (boo). I agree with Bryan when he calls this a “potentially business-harming disconnect”. Teaming with the right social influencers can provide great return on investment.

Didn’t take long the numbers were coming fast and furious, and wham! Suddenly, it was obvious that there’s good news on the social marketing career front.

Social media as an occupation is no longer limited to entry-level or mid-level employees, but has elevated into the offices of senior-level executives as a top marketing priority.”

Almost 50 social media related job titles were reported in 2017 State of Social Marketing.

Titles like…

  • Social Media Strategist
  • Social Media Specialist
  • Marketing Coordinators
  • Director of Social Media Marketing

Some numbers from the report

  • 19,508,766 professionals on LinkedIn list “social media” as a skill
  • 120,000+ specialized jobs in social media listed between LinkedIn & Indeed.com

As social marketing budgets go up, so should the jobs.

Wow! In 2007 Facebook business pages were at 100,000. Here we are 10 years later with more than 65 million business profiles. Seems to me increasing social marketing budgets is a good idea.

Advice that really hit home for someone who works in Social Marketing

Good advice for social marketers, pick your top two challenges and focus on those.“Pick your top two challenges as a social marketer and focus on those.” Lucy Hitz, Head of Marketing Communication at Simply Measured answered in response to a question.

Took me less than a minute to pick my two social media struggles.

My top two social marketing problem areas are content management and analytics.

I need to automate and organize social media post schedules so that I can spend more of my time creating valuable original content. Which I happen to enjoy doing and is vital to my success. I need a better way to manage posting to more than 15 social media accounts on a regular basis, and at the best times. I’ve been looking at various options for more than a year now. Time to take the plunge and decide which program!

Find an affordable solution for tracking and analyzing social marketing campaign results. Especially relevant so that I can replicate what works. For my own social media accounts, as well as for my clients. How can I tell which campaigns are working? Obviously my first choice is Simply Measured, but I’m a solopreuneur. That analytics solution is a tad out of my price range (for now).  No more putting it off, I have to test a couple in my price range now!

Then what was mentioned next in the webinar?  “Analytics software was selected as the most-needed resource for marketers in 2017 to do their best work, by both brands and agencies.”

Bingo, time for me to take that plunge and finally decide which applications to use for social media post scheduling, campaign management & analytics. I’ve been caught up in that research stage far too long. By the sounds of it, I’m not the only one facing this dilemma in social marketing.

What an optimistic reveal. Now I’m off to download and read The State of Social Marketing 2017 Annual Report.

Va va va Video

I often wonder how long should a video be in a social media post. I’m a two or three minute video viewer. If it’s really juicy info, you know useful, then I stick around for maybe 5 minutes.
When I’m social media’ing how long I watch a video depends on how relevant, valuable, credible and useful I find it to be.
 
So what’s the answer then? How long should your social media marketing videos be? Ana Gotter suggests…

Doing the Do on Social Media Platforms

The “Do” I’m referring to is getting down and socializing. Carrying on conversations with real people.

For the sake of simplicity let’s use Twitter as the “social media platform” of choice to talk about today. #Twitter just so happens to be my favourite.

Now, when I say socialize, I mean you know “talk” via tweets. That’s the point right? To engage fellow social media types into back and forth “conversations”.

Do you comment when you retweet? Yes? Great! Oh oh, did I hear a no? If you never initiate a conversation (attempt to engage) how exactly are you “socializing”?

Don’t just like and retweet, make a comment snarky, funny or sweet! Ask a question, make a request something that encourages a reply is best…

I think that people have lost sight of the fact that “Social Media” is about SOCIALIZING. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and the others, these are places to gather and socially share things.

Use Social Media to Connect with like minded peopleSocial media didn’t become so popular because it’s a great place to MARKET your business, it became popular because it’s fun to engage with like-minded people.

Within the mysterious world of social media you can meet up with people who have the exact same passion, hobby, interest as you. The teeniest, tiniest of niches hang out together on social media.

Not one single friend of mine has guinea pigs as pets, but I do. Social media gives me the chance to share with other guinea pig owners – I mean thousands of them.
